Top10 Rappers in Africa 2016

10. Tumi – SouthAfrica  
Tumi is a South African rapper, poet and songwriter. He was the lead vocalist of Tumi and the Volume, that was officially disbanded in 2012. Tumi and the Volume also comprises the members of the Mozambican band. Molekane was born in Tanzania while his South African parents lived in exile there. He wins the #10 slot for the best 10 rappers in Africa.

9. M.anifest – Ghana 
M. is an award winning Ghanaian rapper and songwriter. He has worked with the likes of Damon Albarn, Flea, Tony Allen, Erykah Badu, and is featured on five songs on the Rocket Juice and The Moon album.He is the grandson of one of Africa’s foremost ethnomusicogists and composers J.H. Kwabena Nketia
M.anifest has won several awards including best rapper of the year (2013) – Ghana Music Award, Hip-Hop Song of the Year (2013) – Ghana Music Awards, Best Hip-Hop Video – 4syte Music Video Awards, Minnesota Emerging composer Award (MECA) (2010) – American Composers Forum and Songwriter of the Year (2008) – City Pages.


8. AKA – South Africa
AKA is a rapper, record producer, actor, songwriter and a sound engineer. AKA has opened for Kanye West, Snoop dogg, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar in their South African tours. He has won many awards including “Best Street Urban Music Album” and “Male Artist of the Year” at the 18th South African Music Awards (SAMA) South African equivalent to the Grammys. AKA won the 2014 Most Gifted Hip Hop from Channel O, Best Male Artist – 2015 from South African Music Awards, 2015: Best Male Southern Africa from African Muzik Magazine Awards.


7. Ice Prince – Nigeria 
Oleku hitmaker, Ice Prince, is a Nigerian hip hop recording artist and actor. He rose to fame after releasing “Oleku”, one of Nigeria’s most remixed songs of all time.He won the 2009 Hennessy Artistry Club Tour. His achievements include one BET Award, one Ghana Music Award, three The Headies Awards, two Nigeria Entertainment Awards and two Channel O Music Video Awards. Ice Prince is currently signed to Chocolate City.


6. ProVerb – South Africa 
ProVerb “real name Tebogo Thekisho” is an iconic South African Hip Hop recording artist, MC, Lecturer, Brand ambassador, TV and Radio Personality and also a father and husband. Pro started his rap career back in 1999, and over time he became renowned as being one of the few rappers who never cursed or used vulgar languages in any of his songs “Which is very rare in the Rap World”. He is also best known for hosting South African Idols Season 6 – 9 “Co–Executive Producer for Seasons 8 and 9“, and was a celebrity contestant on M-Net’s Survivor South Africa ” Santa Carolina” in 2009 in which he finished 3rd in that reality contest. His Music career boasts 4 amazing studio albums and one awesome Mixtape Album – his albums include Book of ProVerb Album “released in 2007“,Manuscript “released in 2007“, Write of Passage “released in 2010”, Fourth Write “released in 2012″ and his Mixtape “Off Da Books“. Over the last 5 years, he has won numerous awards and nominations such as the Most Gifted South Video in the Channel O Music Awards,


5. L-Tido – South Africa
Thato Madonsela, better known by his stage name L-Tido, is a South African hip hop recording artist from Alexandra, Johannesburg. The artist is best known for being one of few independent artists. He is a rapper, songwriter, record producer, entertainer and performer. L-Tido has worked with numerous artists all over Africa, and has been on songs with Banky W, Wizkid and Ice Prince from Nigeria, Camp Mulla and Bon-Eye from Kenya, Sarkodie and D-Black from Ghana. His dynamic rap has earned him the fifth position.



4. Shukid – Kenya
Shukid is arguably the most best rapper in East Africa. He is #4 on our list.



M.I. is a Nigerian hip hop recording artist and the current CEO of the Chocolate City. He has won several awards including the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009. He was nominated in the Best International Act category at the BET Awards 2010. He rose to prominence in 2006 when his song “Crowd Mentality” became popular in his hometown of Jos.


2. Khaligraph Jones – Kenya
Brian Robert Ouko, known by the stage name, Khaligraph Jones, is one of Kenyans finest Hip Hop artists. His delivery on the mic is super. When it comes to battling you've got to acknowledge Khaligraph.

1. Sarkodie – Ghana 
Topping the list of the top 10 best rappers in Africa is Sarkodie. Michael Owusu Addo is a Ghanaian hip hop and hiplife recording artist from Tema. Sarkodie is often named as one of Africa’s greatest Hip hop artists. MTV ranked him number 6 on their list of Hottest African MC’s in 2014. In 2013, Lynx TV ranked him number 1 on their list of the “Top 10 Ghanaian Rappers Of All Time”. In 2015, AfricaRanking.com ranked him number 3 on their list of “Top 10 African Rappers Of 2015”. In 2015, Sarkodie was named by The Guardian as one of the top five hip hop acts on the African continent.

  1. It's so unfair seeing this list and Ruyonga aka KruKid or Ruuu from Uganda isn't on it. He is by far the most lyriclly diverse artist in East Africa(my opinion) Go listen to him. Thanks
